But bullying by adults \u2014 specifically bosses and co-workers \u2014 isn\u2019t a new phenomenon. It\u2019s been happening for years and goes on all of the time.<br \/>\nIt may be surprising to learn that bullying is legal. It\u2019s only against the law if it\u2019s attached to some other form of discrimination related to <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/age-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">age<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/sexual-harassment\/new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sex harassment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/race-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">race<\/a>, marital status or the other protected classes.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/employment-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">Discrimination in the workplace<\/a>, no matter what its form, provides the foundation for an abusive workplace. And an abusive workplace has a direct relationship to employees\u2019 quality of work life. Nationally, it\u2019s estimated that 37 percent of U.S. workers face bullying issues that can cause a variety of stress-related physical and emotional conditions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hypertension<\/li>\n<li>Auto-immune disorders<\/li>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The United States is one of the few countries that doesn\u2019t have a national anti-bullying law. Individual states and cities, however, are moving aggressively to stem the tide. New York City has taken action against bullying that contributes to employee harassment and abuse by adopting the Healthy Workplace Bill. It may not be the complete answer to eliminating abusive behavior, but it provides some protection against bullying. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/retaliation\/new-york-city\/\">prohibits retaliation to employees<\/a> who are courageous enough to defend themselves in a court action.<\/p>\n<p>In a tight economy, keeping a job is paramount.
