And, just like the last four times, the Assembly passed GENDA over the past decade \u2014 an anti-discrimination law that would add \u201cgender identity and expression\u201d to the existing New York State Human Rights Law \u2014 the New York State Senate failed to act on the civil rights legislation before it.<\/p>\n<p>In an October 2012 public forum sponsored by State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assembly Member Richard Gottfried, New Yorkers and their families, law enforcement representatives, advocates, and public officials from around the state gathered to testify about the theoretical impact of GENDA on the lives of <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/lgbtq-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">transgender<\/a> New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>According to testimony presented by the Empire State Pride Agenda:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One out of every three transgender New Yorkers have been homeless at one time.<\/li>\n<li>Two out of every three transgender New Yorkers have experienced discrimination at work.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 30 percent of transgender New Yorkers have experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/rape-sexual-assault\/new-york-city\/\">sexual assault<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly four out of five New Yorkers are in favor of a transgender civil rights bill.<\/li>\n<li>Transgender New Yorkers risk <a href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/wrongful-termination\/new-york-city\/\">losing their jobs<\/a>, being refused service at restaurants and in stores, and even being evicted from their homes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently, New York&#8217;s civil rights laws make it illegal to discriminate based on <a title=\"Discriminaci\u00f3n por edad\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/age-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">age<\/a>, <a title=\"Discriminaci\u00f3n racial\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/race-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">race<\/a>, creed, <a title=\"Discriminaci\u00f3n por origen nacional\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/national-origin-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">national origin<\/a>, <a title=\"Sexual Orientation Discrimination \" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/sexual-orientation-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">sexual orientation<\/a>, <a title=\"Gender Discrimination\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/gender-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">gender<\/a>, military status, and <a title=\"Family and Medical Leave Act Claims\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/family-medical-leave-act\/new-york-city\/\">family status<\/a>. But the law does not extend that protection to transgender people.
