Four institutions in New York are on the list.<br \/>\nUnder Title IX of the Higher Education Act,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><a title=\"discrimination on the basis of sex\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/gender-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">discrimination on the basis of sex<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>is prohibited in any education program or activity that receives federal funds. The schools listed are suspected of violating the Act when acting on gender or assault-based complaints.<br \/>\nIn making public the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><a title=\"list of 55 schools\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/us-department-education-releases-list-higher-education-institutions-open-title-i\">list of 55 schools<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>under investigation, the Department of Education hopes to support discussion of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><a title=\"Discrimination\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/employment-discrimination\/new-york-city\/\">discriminaci\u00f3n<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>and misconduct. Notes Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Catherine E. Lhamon, &#8220;We hope this increased transparency will spur community dialogue about this important issue.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>The New York schools that appear on the list include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font: 13px\/16px Calibri, Candara, Segoe, 'Segoe UI', Optima, Arial, sans-serif; margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px; color: #444444; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\">\n<li>CUNY Hunter College<\/li>\n<li>Hobart and William Smith Colleges<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Lawrence College<\/li>\n<li>SUNY at Binghamton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interestingly, Columbia University does not currently appear on the list.<br \/>\nIn late April, a group of students filed three complaints against Columbia University and associated institution Barnard College, with the U.S. Department of Education. The complaints allege inappropriate handling of allegations of sexual assault and other misconduct on the campus of Columbia University.<br \/>\nIn early May, the Department of Education also released a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><a title=\"Board of Ed guidance document\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/docs\/qa-201404-title-ix.pdf\">guidance document<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>concerning procedural requirements for institutions responding to complaints of sexual harassment or assault.  The comprehensive document outlines recommended measures from investigation to appeals of allegations of sexual violence.<br \/>\nUnchecked sexual misconduct in university could lead to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><a title=\"acoso sexual\" href=\"https:\/\/discriminationandsexualharassmentlawyers.com\/employment-law\/sexual-harassment\/criminal-sexual-conduct-in-the-workplace\/\">acoso sexual<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>in the workforce.
